Having Fun and Being Safe on Social Networking Pages

Being safe on the internet. Having fun and being safe on social network pages.

It seems that everyone today is using one form of social networking or other, Facebook, Myspace, and Myyearbook to name a few. There are tons of them out there to choose from and all of them have similar features. They provide a place to put a profile, a place to post pictures, a place to post messages and blogs, and a place to chat. They are a great place to get in touch with old friends, meet new people, pursue romantic interests and keep up contact with people who are miles away from you and let them know what you are doing.

Regardless of what your reasons for using a social network there are some things you should keep in mind about these sites to maintain safety, have fun and also promote yourself, your business, your band, your art or whatever it is you’re promoting. Keep in mind that people lie all the time about themselves. The downside to social networking sites is that you can’t ever truly know who that other person is that you are talking to. The upside is it allows all of us to maintain some sort of anonymity.

Here are some helpful hints that will keep you safe and allow you to have fun. Never post your address or phone number on a webpage. If this is business related that’s different, of course you’re going to post that information, this is more for people using these sites for social and romantic reasons. Be clear and honest about who you are, your likes and dislikes, what your interests are. There is no point in lying about yourself unless, like some other people on these networks, you are trying to deceive someone into believing your something you’re not.

Post pictures of yourself, of course, we all like to see who we are talking to. But, for goodness sakes, never post nude pictures of yourself on-line, first of all it’s down right tacky, second it’s dangerous, third it is definitely not going to attract the kind of people to you that you really may want to meet. Never post pictures of other people, friends and such, that may offend or hurt them. That’s wrong on so many different levels and chances are it’s going to come back to bite you.

BY all means have fun, but always remember to be very cautious with people you are just getting to know. If something about them doesn’t sit right with you block them or don’t accept their friendship. Remember social networks provide a certain amount of anonymity but it’s up to you to safe guard yourself and your family. Happy networking!
